There is no sign of tannery relocation from Hazaribagh to Savar although the High Court ordered owners of tanneries to pay Tk 50,000 per day each in compensation for damaging the environment.

The workers in Hazaribagh tannery were seen to work as usual on Wednesday.

Tannery owners said that they have nothing to do as the relocation process will take the whole year. Tannery relocation is a slow process. Government`s compensation is not sufficient to relocate the tanneries.

Earlier, on June 16, the High Court directed 154 tannery owners at Hazaribagh will have to pay Tk 50,000 per day as compensation to the government for not relocating their industries to Savar Tannery Estate within the given time.

Following a petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, the HC also directed the industries secretary to submit a report on whether the tannery owners have paid the compensation.

The industries secretary has to submit the report to the HC by July 17.

The court also ordered the environment secretary to assess the damage of environment of Buriganga River due to the tannery industries and to submit a report in this regard by July 17.

The observation of green group Paribash Banchao Andolan said that waste-dumping from tanneries has almost killed the River Buriganga is known to all, including the incumbents. The dumping of chromium, lead, sulphuric acid, hydrogen sulphide, formic acid, heavy metals, fat, salt and other discarded tannery wastes pose serious threat to public health and environment.
